Warm Fuzzies

Mar 08, 2024

We all like a ‘warm fuzzy’ – that moment when someone says something or does something that tells you you’ve been appreciated.  It might be a compliment about something you’ve said or done or the way you look.  It might be them expressing gratitude to you.  It might be as simple as a smile exchanged.  I told my co-workers yesterday that ‘I love my job’ and one of them said ‘we can see that Jo, you’re so passionate about it’ and I still feel good today because of it.  Why?  Because it’s important to me.  I want to be passionate about what I do and I want to share it.  And when something is important to us, it matters even more when people notice.

But

We can’t always know what’s important to someone, particularly those important things that live deep inside us.  Like having integrity, being respectful, having independence, being courageous and so on.  The better we know them, the more we learn about them of course.  And, if we stop and think about it, if, say, being respectful is important to someone, how do we know how to show them that respect?  For some people being on time is how to do it.  Others don’t care about punctuality so much.  A minefield!  We could work very hard being punctual for someone who’s not bothered!

BUT we shouldn’t let that stop us behaving respectfully (or in a way we believe to be respectful).  Nor should we let that stop us remarking on what we see in others.

When you see something beautiful in someone, tell them. It may take seconds to say, but for them, it could last a lifetime. – Unknown
